R&D ORGANISATION PROFILE

Sonderforschungsbereich 390 - Magnesiumtechnologie

The Institut fuer Werkstoffkunde und Werkstofftechnik (Department of Materials Science and Technology) at the Technical University of Clausthal has been working on magnesium alloys, their production and processing for over 10 years. In addition, they are involved in a Thrust Research Project SFB 390, funded by the German Research Community (DFG). This contains 17 research projects with a research staff of about 50 people established at 9 different departments of the Technical University of Clausthal and the University of Hannover.

In the area of magnesium technology, the activities include the development of magnesium materials for complex applications. These are investigated and optimised in the respect of metallurgy, materials science and processing. This research aims to contribute to the development of magnesium materials as well as economic and environmental aspects. The centre of interest is to elaborate the basis about the influence of:

Processing techniques are being investigated including:

In addition, the corrosion stability and environmental acceptability of these advanced magnesium materials and composites complete the whole research concept.
